Lincolnville Comprehensive Plan
Summary of Mapping Process

Good maps are essential to understanding the existing land use in a community and making intelligent decisions on future land use questions. Through the comprehensive planning process, Lincolnville has developed a series of computer-aided and hand drawn maps that will serve as a useful resource for years to come.

Through a competitive bidding process, Lincolnville contracted with a Maine firm to produce five computer aided maps. Using Arc-Info software system and data provided by the Maine Department of Conservation, the following maps were created at a scale of 1” =1000’:

Base map- shows town boundaries, roads, parcels and waterbodies. It is used as the basis for other maps in this series.

Soils Map- codifies Lincolnville’s soil groupings into three ranges of development potential, based on soil characteristics.

Water Resources Map- identifies watershed boundaries, lakes and ponds, wetlands, and streams. It will be useful in tracking potential problems within watersheds.

Sensitive Areas Map- identifies a variety of sensitive areas in Lincolnville including sand and gravel aquifers, wetlands, deer wintering yards, low development soils, flood plains and steep slopes.

Parcel Overlay Map- illustrates Lincolnville’s parcels on clear acetate which can be overlaid with the other maps. It is very useful in illustrating the soils, sensitive areas or water resources relative to a particular parcel or area of town.

The information on all these maps is in a digital format, which can be accessed, combined or updated quickly and inexpensively.

In addition to the computer maps,. two hand drawn maps have been produced, an existing land use map and future land use map.

Existing Land Use Map- beautifully illustrated by Kerry Hardy, it shows the land uses in Lincolnville as they existed in the spring of 1992. The map will provide a very useful reference point over time.

Future Land Use Map- shows the areas which the plan identifies as growth areas in the near future.

We are confident that with this set of maps, Lincolnville’s elected and appointed officials have an important tool to assist them in making wise land use decisions in the years ahead.

Note: All of the maps outlined are available in the Lincolnville Town Office.
